 2018 Shell Eco-marathon

Description of event:

With three annual events in Asia, the Americas and Europe, student teams take to the track to see who goes further on the least amount of fuel.  In 2018, Shell welcomed more than 1,000 students from 99 high schools and universities across North and South America to Make the Future California featuring Shell Eco-marathon Americas at Sonoma Raceway.

Make the Future California provides a platform for innovation, collaboration and conversation around the world’s energy challenges, as part of a global series of events throughout 2018. Shell Eco-marathon is a unique competition that challenges students around the world to design, build and drive the most energy-efficient car.

Our Expectations

Our mission for the competition is to do our absolute best, learn from the experience, have the spirit of cooperation and teamwork, and apply what we learn to all endeavors.

Here are just a few comments from the students:

Pyo Pyo said: “… I also had fun working with the team, and getting to communicate with each other and using teamwork. Seeing California was the best thing that happened in my lifetime.”

Jarry stated: “I have not felt more joy and more emotions than at Shell Eco-marathon. I learned many things from there, but most importantly how the teams supported other and the way you think differently about the competition, and the mindset you have changes from trying to beat a team to having fun and learning more about the teams and their car.”

Star says: “We really enjoyed the Shell Eco-marathon Americas starting with learning and seeing how big the world actually is with all types of different characters and teams to learn from. It was really the best experience I have ever participated in.”

Bailey said: “That feeling you get when you first get there is unforgettable. All of the teams are so friendly and willing to help. The diversity of the event and the teams is always astounding. The joy we got when we made it through tech inspection and even more joy when we made a few laps is unbeatable.”

Justin stated: “It was amazing to see the vehicle that the team and I dedicated our time on pass inspection within three tries when less than half the teams in the competition were able to pass. After passing inspection, it was great to see our driver complete laps on the track, it definitely boosted my pride and made me feel accomplished that I was able to work on something so magnificent.”
