Lisa Woolstrum Receives Tannenbaum Reading Instruction Award

The 2020 Leah Louise B. Tannenbaum Award for Excellence in Reading Instruction is being presented to Lisa Woolstrum at Morehead Elementary School. Ms. Woolstrum is an NC certified Reading Specialist with a Master’s degree in Reading. She has created chants and hands-on phonics manipulatives to motivate her students and also developed a daily reading/phonics routine the students know and enjoy. Each student has a reading log to ensure they read every day to her and/or their parents and she continuously evaluates their progress to identify individual weaknesses and strengths. She communicates not just with each child, but also each child’s classroom teacher and parents. She has used various programs to increase students’ comprehension skills and decoding strategies, while creating a warm, inviting environment that increases the children’s confidence and fosters their love of reading.
